When Does Eating Healthy Make Your Life Happy?

  • Posted on July 31, 2012 at 7:27 am

Is it possible for our eating lifestyle to affect our entire lifestyle? Definitely! It is like saying if we eat healthy we are actually living a happy life. Obviously, since when we are well-fed, we are healthy in all aspects—mentally, physically, spiritually, and of course, emotionally. And this is what actual happiness is. When we live in the healthiest possible way, there should be no reason for us not to be totally happy, too.

There are times when we get a little bit cloudy in terms of our outlook in life. This is particularly true on an empty and not properly nourished stomach. Eating, not just any food, but good ones, can actually fuel you to last the whole day full of activities and pressures. Being fed well will not make you feel in any way groggy, or even dead-tired. And when we are hungry and poorly nourished our line of thinking and point of view will also be affected in an adverse way.

So, your question will probably be, what are the things that one must do in order to live a healthy lifestyle? This good question requires a good answer. The primary thing we should do is that we have to know and we have to be informed about what is the exact meaning of eating healthy.

To eat healthy does not in any way mean dieting and becoming very thin. It does not mean becoming a religious vegetarian, nor does it mean to be vitamin supplements dependent, or eating only one or two of the basic food group. Although, you must not also think that doing these things will mean that you are not healthy, but rather it simply means and shows that you are depriving yourself of the chance to know what healthy eating actually means.

Enjoying the food you eat can be one sign of good eating. In your attempt to eat healthy, it does not necessary mean that you will be choosing those foods that you regard as "bad tasting". It may mean, on the other hand, giving your taste buds the chance to finally meet and get used to eating organic, fresh, safer, and cleaner foods that you can have and you can give your family.

Another thing is that you certainly do not have to stop and deprive yourself of the chance to enjoy some of the foods that you really love. Instead, you can start by making small steps into going over the border of those foods you usually eat over the good and the right and the healthy ones. Having a positive mind and a positive outlook on this will also make you have a positive view of how you should eat right. Anyway, if there is someone who should love yourself first, that someone would have to be you. So start loving yourself. Through this, you will be able to finally realize what should be done.

Remember that having a healthy eating will also gibe healthy organs. Take note that your body is a living organism in any way you look at it. Therefore, it needs and requires all the nutrition it can get in order to work properly, and most especially to stay alive. Healthy foods are precisely needed by all our organs—our heart, liver, kidneys, and all the other bodily organs. They definitely need foods that are healthy in order to function at their optimum levels.

Whenever you get sick, caught a disease, or run down, this is primarily because your body is not getting the vital nutrition that it needs to keep it running smoothly. And even though each organ has its own function, they have to work together for a total mind and health fitness.

And finally, healthy eating will definitely and 100% promote positive benefits and positive changes. It is not enough that you lose weight, but the most important thing is that you managed to change the way you are eating. And if this leads to weight loss, then it will be your bonus. Changing the old pattern of the way you eat will really make the difference in your outlook and lifestyle.  Just remember this in your journey, do not get overwhelmed by all the things you are reading about eating and losing weight. And this, in turn, will make your life a happy one.

Eating Healthy; a Pragmatic Approach

  • Posted on July 29, 2012 at 2:37 am

It has been over 25 years, since I have been taking push-ups five days a week. I have strong arms, but it was not an overnight miracle. It's not like that I did push-ups for a few weeks or months and stopped it altogether. It had to be one of my habits to do push-ups, if I wanted to maintain the result I got. Same is the case of eating healthy food. Eating healthy food once a while, won't make you healthy. It has be your habit to eat healthy food to keep up nutritional health. When people read or view anything on healthy food habits or nutrition, they excitedly jump over the trend of healthy eating. These reading will surely give you a detailed list of the food that makes you healthy, but you don't learn how to make it a habit to eat healthy. So, people tend to pull back their hands to the old unhealthy food, after a period of time.

How is habit defined? According to Webster's dictionary a habit is "a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance."Do you think applying this definition into our life will lead us to take only good food to get a wonderful health?

Unsound eating habits

Development of unsound eating habit doesn't happen overnight. It starts developing as a habit for many people from childhood itself. Therefore, it becomes very difficult to change this habit as people have been following it for many years and is a part of their lifestyle.

Why do we need to eat?

We eat food for two main reasons. First reason is to provide fuel to our body and the second one is for delight. Alas, most of the food which provides us delight, does not provide health. People usually go for food, according to how it looks, tastes and smells. Read these three sentences: "That pie sure looks good! That pie sure smells good! That pie sure tastes good!" All the three sentences have food and delight. Nevertheless, the food that produces delight (the pie) doesn't surely give you health from another viewpoint. So, we have to be smart enough in selecting our food and should not plainly go with our senses.

You can eat healthy and enjoy at the same time

It is usually believed that healthy eating is boring and tasteless. According to me, this feeling comes because people get to see innumerable commercial ads for foods with high calories, fats or sugar and see only a few on fruits, vegetables, grains and beans. But we don't have a nutrition education class, so as to make people aware that healthy eating can be delightful and tasteful.

My life became healthier with my healthy eating habits

In 1998, my wife at last talked to me about going to a doctor for a checkup. But I was not sick; however she said it is good to take an annual checkup. I am grateful to God that I listened to her.

In life, I have been very active. In a week, I cover 18 miles running. Therefore, I was not expecting the bad news the doctor gave me when I went to him. I had borderline diabetes. Not treating diabetes can be highly dangerous. In United States, Diabetes is one the most common reason of death.  Diabetes, a pancreas disease, stops the body to produce insulin that regulates the blood sugar level.

Doctor did not feel a need to put me on medication, but he suggested me to take up some reading on healthy eating. This was the beginning to my healthy lifestyle that tremendously changed my health condition altogether. Today, I am very healthy and I can confidently say that. I feel great, I can sleep well, people say I look much younger than my age, I weigh healthy, I don't take any medicines, I have normal blood pressure, normal blood sugar, normal cholesterol level, I have good immunity, the list does not end.

Good health makes us feel really great and I am thankful to God. But, I don't believe that it's because of chance, I have become healthy. I believe the reason behind my health is because I took responsibility of my health. This responsibility includes making healthy eating a habit. There are certain laws for our physical bodies which are ruled by proper nutrition. Eating unhealthy food regularly is disobeying the body laws, that makes you sick.

Top 10 Eating Healthy Tips for 2012

  • Posted on July 27, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Eating healthy is not just a fad.  It's not just for hippie granola types, it's not something to practice only under a doctors direction.  Carefully choosing the foods you eat has an impact on every aspect of your life, happiness, social interactions, and overall well-being.

However, eating healthy means different things to different people, and that's okay.  To some, it means salads and carrot sticks at every meal.  To others, it's simply finding a new way to enjoy more wholesome ingredients without feeling like they're depriving themselves of flavor and enjoyment.

Most people don't want to be on a "diet", while the truth is that everyone is on a diet.  Diet is the summation of all you eat, good or bad it's your diet.  My point is that you needn't be on a diet to improve your overall diet if you think of the word as something permanent, not temporary.  We all know temporary diets are just that, fleeting in time.

If you want to improve the quality of what you eat in this new year, whether for health or just a curiosity of the world of foods now available, I've got 10 Eating Healthy Tips for 2012.  Here are the first five:

10)  Understand that recipes have inherent limitations and you CAN change them.

Don't go looking for recipes that call themselves "low fat", you can make ANY recipe low fat when you know the changes to make.

9)  Examine what foods or eating habits you KNOW are bad for you and slowly try to eliminate or reduce them in your diet.

Too much take-out food?  Too much snacking?  What small changes can you make immediately?

8)  Identify the foods in your pantry that are not contributing to eating healthy and stop buying them.

When you eat complete, nutritious meals there's no reason to keep bags of chips or unhealthy snacks around.  You won't need them.

7)  Change your eating habits by eating better quality foods more purposefully rather than quickly consuming convenience items.

Stop eating in the car.  Stop eating while you walk or eating meals in less than 10 minutes.  Sit down, relax and concentrate on the good fuel going into your body.

6)  Stop the guessing in your cooking.  Healthy eating may not be appealing to you because you lack confidence to cook the most wholesome foods.  You might hate asparagus because you have never had well cooked asparagus.  Find a way that you can cook healthy items consistently.

5)  Then, get some healthy foods.  That should be obvious, you can't eat better if you don't know how to go about it.  Visit the farmers market.  Ask you local grocer which foods they recommend.

4)  Master ONE basic cooking method, like saute'.  Basic saute is a procedure you can repeat over and over again, only changing the ingredients to create an endless number of recipe-free meals that came from your inspirations and desires.

3)  Be sure you keep the healthy in healthy eating.  Use methods like steaming over boiling for vegetables so you don't cook out all the nutrients.

2)  Use a basic method, but substitute better proteins.  Using beans instead of rice, pasta, or potatoes gives you nutrients your body will love as much as your taste buds.

1)  Use seasonings correctly to add unique flavors to healthy foods, and don't over-season.  All the herbs and spices in the world won't save a badly cooked item.  However, the skillful use of seasonings can highlight the natural flavor of what you've cooked and add endless variety of worldwide flavors.

If you want to begin this new year with a new outlook on food, consider my 10 Healthy Eating Tips.  First, examine what and how you eat now.  Then, seek out more wholesome foods and learn to cook them in a way you like and season correctly to give even greater variety to your overall diet.

Eating healthy requires quite a bit of leeway. You might eat too much or not enough, consume foods that are sometimes more or less nutritious. However, you should always fuel your body and your brain regularly with enough food to keep both your mind and body strong and alert.

Eating healthy is something we all would like to do, although it can be hard.  In order to eat healthy, you must first make the right food choices.  Eating healthy is all about what you eat, which makes the choices very crucial to your results.

Stop eating Processed junk food and do your grocery shopping on your own, because your children and sometimes your spouse are usually the ones requesting Processed junk food. Shopping alone will ensure that you only buy the foods that you need.

Drink pure Filtered Water and unsweating herb tea instead of coffee, milk, juice and soft drinks. If you need milk or milk products on a daily basis for your Children, then buy organic milk or milk products with 2% or less fat, low sugar and salt.

Buy fruits in quantity, When they are in season, buy fruits in quantity and freeze any extras. You can buy several pounds this way, and freeze extras to have them when the fruit goes out of season. Wash the fruit well, remove any spoiled pieces, dry thoroughly, then freeze in plastic zipper bags.

Lean Meats and beans are a good sources for protein, but lean meat is more expensive than meats with a lot of fat, so limit your meats to once or twice a month. All beans are a healthier chose for protein then meats, as they give you protein at a great price.

You should use beans as a substitute for meat on a frequent occasion. There are several varieties, so you can prepare them in a crock pot, when you return home they are ready to  consume.

The USDA recommends eating beans at least 4 times per week.  If you experience gas after eating beans you should try washing them, covering them with water and put half a raw potato into the pot of beans, bringing the water to a boil, then draining it off and remove the cooked potato, leaving the pot with just beans.

If you live in a coastal area or an area where fish are around, make that an integral part of your diet. You can catch them from the lakes or rivers, saving money in the process.

Peanut butter is great for those with low income, as it's popular with almost everyone. You can use it for sandwiches instead of eating hot dogs. Read the label on the jar as sum Peanut butter jars need to be refrigerated and sum does not, although bigger jars can last you for weeks or months.

You should buy foods that have a high content of water.  Watermelon, salads, and even sugar free gelatin are all great examples.

Healthy eating is all about balanced and moderate eating, consisting of healthy meals at least three times per day.  Healthy eaters eat many different types of foods, not limiting themselves to one specific food type or food group.

You should always remember that restricting food in any way is always a bad thing.  Healthy eating is a way of life, something that you can do to enhance your body or your lifestyle.  If you've thought about making your life better, healthy eating is just the place to start.  You'll make life easier for yourself, those around you, and even your family.

“Healthy Eating” Shopping List

  • Posted on March 26, 2012 at 11:40 am

"Healthy eating" starts with careful planning and organization. Since fresh     produce has a very limited shelf life, regular grocery shopping is a must. Creating a menu for the week and writing out a shopping list will save you time and money; while helping you stick to healthy recipes. Local health food stores and farmer markets are very money-wise solutions. Plus, frequent visits will allow you expand your culinary horizons as well as mingle with other health-concerned people.

"Healthy eating" means using fresh ingredients and gentle cooking methods without adding any artificial ingredients and fats. "Healthy eating" requires a lot of cooking, since take-out food often contains too many refined fats and artificial seasonings. However, with modern appliances you will discover that cooking is no longer an annoying chore reserved for special occasions, but an exciting part of everyday life.

So which products should we buy when we actually decide to begin eating healthy food? Here’s what your weekly shopping list should include.

Vegetables. All vegetables should be eaten young, when they are tender and not coarse. Vegetables are best bought from fresh food markets or seasonal, when they are sold in boxes or baskets. Supermarket vegetables are often genetically modified or have been picked green and ripened in boxes when traveling long distances. Sprouts and brightly colored vegetables contain the most vitamins and antioxidants.

Fruits. Again, the trick is to buy seasonal fruit, since exotic fruits have often traveled long distances and ripened in their boxes, not on trees. Local, naturally ripened or, better yet, organic fruit are the best choice for the health-conscious cook.

Herbs. Aromatic herbs and spices can be used fresh or dried. The best idea is to plant the aromatic herbs in pots on your window and use them fresh whenever you need them. To preserve flavor, you can buy spices whole and use them freshly ground.

Cheese. Although cheese is quite rich in fats, cheese is a great source of vitamins and minerals. Buy only fresh cheeses in small quantities and try to eat them at once, since gourmet cheeses don’t have a lengthy shelf life.

Eggs. Buy only organic or free-range eggs, and shake them before buying to ensure freshness.

Fish and shellfish. The best way to buy fish is fresh and unfrozen. Again, most of the fish in supermarkets comes from fish farms where it is fed with artificial substances, and this fish cannot be used in healthy recipes. Pink salmon and other popular kinds of fish will most likely come from a fish farm. Shellfish is a more healthy choice, since shrimp, for example, does not live in chemically polluted water. When you boil mussels, discard those that do not open.

Meat. For truly "healthy eating" purposes it’s better to skip meat entirely, since it’s almost impossible to find meat that comes from an environmentally and health conscious farmer. Most of the meat in supermarkets has enormous quantities of growth hormones and antibiotics. The best meat for use in healthy recipes comes from small farming communities or organic farms.

Grains. Whole wheat and whole grains should become a staple of your "healthy eating" routine, because many healthy ingredients are contained in the grain shell. Rice is the only exclusion from the rule, because, even though the rice grain shell is removed, many nutritional elements still remain in the rice grain.

What we eat become a part of us. So make your kitchen a starting point for your new "healthy eating" habits, and enjoy preparing healthy meals.
