Getting fit is about adding movement into you lifestyle and adapting your eating habits to be healthier and more calorie conscious.  Just moving or just eating right however is not going to yield the results you are after.  Losing weight and getting in the best shape of your life takes hard work, determination and a lot of will power.

The absolute best way to get fat off the body is combination training.  You want to incorporate cardio in with strength training to get the the results you desire.  Cardio is important to help burn fat off the body but the strength training also burns fat while toning and creating lean muscle.  Many people shy away from strength training in fear of bulking up and this is a big mistake.  Lean muscle mass helps the body to burn more fat which is why it is important to add strength training in with cardio for maximum results.

When it comes to strength training you can either use weights or use bodyweight training.  That is using your own body weight to strengthen the muscles versus using added weights such as dumb bells and the like.  Using your own body weight allows for you to strengthen the muscle without added strain.  It is a good place to start when you begin a new routine.  Now using dumb bells is not a bad thing when you start out either- I would recommend lower weights to start though.  When you incorporate weights into your routine you are helping to increase the endurance of the muscle as well as strengthening the muscle.  The key thing to remember when using dumb bells is to incorporate small muscle groups in with the larger muscle groups.  This increases the fat burning capacity of the body and will deliver results quicker than if you were to only work a smaller muscle group such as the biceps.  So, instead of just doing curls, you could add in a lunge with the curl and you would be working both the biceps (smaller muscle) and the quads and hamstrings (larger muscle group) providing you with maximum fat burn.

The next thing to remember and be very conscious of is that while working out is a great way to lose weight and including a mixture of cardio and strength is a proven way to get results you must find ways to change your routine.  Muscle confusion is another key thing to ensure that you continue to see the results you want.  We have all heard people say that they have plateaued or hit a wall with their weight loss and that has a lot to do with the fact that they have gotten into a routine and the body has adjusted accordingly.  By utilizing the concept of muscle confusion your body can't get used to working out the same way all the time and you are less likely to hit that wall or plateau.  Now having said that when and if you do hit a plateau the best way to break through is to step up your workouts- challenge yourself with something new and exciting.  Try a kickboxing class or any kind of exercise you have never done before.  Challenging yourself and applying the muscle confusion theory will help you break through that plateau.

Working out is a very important aspect of getting into the best shape of your life but another key factor as mentioned earlier is eating the right kinds of foods and watching your calorie intake.  Calorie counting is a sure fire way to see what you are consuming and comparing it to how much your body is burning throughout the day.  You can see where your problem areas are and change your course of action accordingly.  Weight loss has one simple principle- calories in versus calories out.  You will not lose weight if the calories you consume are much greater than the calories you expend.

So to sum it all up the absolute best way to get fit is to start couting your calories by keeping a daily food diary, incorporate combination training and muscle confusion theory into your workout routines and I know you will start to see the results you desire.

We track the feedback from our members through a monthly survey of a sample of members from every club every month. The questions we ask are strongly aligned with the Top Ten –i.e. are we living and breathing the Top Ten, and as a consequence are members getting the service they expect. Over the past 12 months our customer service score has improved from an average of 83% to 87%. Our net promoter score, a reference point that can be externally benchmarked has increased over the last 12 months from 18 to 23, a level which compares very favourably with a whole host of world class brands.

At the end of 2009 and into 2010 we have built on these foundations with the launch of our Strategy Map. The Strategy Map enables every single Fitness Firster worldwide to link their role to our operational focus areas, to our customer promise, to our business performance objectives through to our mission. This enables us to ground our mission statement in clearly laid out operational priorities, which ultimately link into our job descriptions, training programs and incentive arrangements.

Our Strategy Map has a number of perspectives, which build on one another.

The first is ‘Fitness Firsters', about our people which helps us be clear as to who we recruit, how we train and develop, how we reward and incentivise, how we promote, and how we lead and manage.

Next is ‘Operating with Excellence', our internal perspective which sets out the activities we must do well. This splits into four pillars: Sales, Fitness, Member Experience and Commercial Management and any initiative we implement at an operational level is linked back to our Strategy Map. That helps our people put our priorities into perspective which results in better implementation and better performance.

The third perspective is called ‘Inspiring our Members', our external perspective. This section contains our brand promise and our unique selling points (USPs) and helps us focus on what matters most to our members.

This will help us to achieve our Business Performance Objectives, which is to profitably, sustainably grow our business. Through this we can deliver our mission: "To be famous for making the world a fitter place; like minded staff and like minded members work together to make that difference".

During the course of the year we have conducted hundreds of workshops where our staff helped build our Strategy Map, and then assessed themselves either at national, regional or club level as to how they perform compared to the objectives set out in the Strategy Map. This exercise has created substantial buy into our strategy, and aided understanding and therefore execution of our operational priorities. I am confidently able to walk into any club worldwide and talk to the club manager about our strategy, where his or her club sits against that strategy, and what they are doing to better execute our strategy.

This natural evolution of the Mission and Values has caused much excitement in our business. In the 2010 survey we asked our people to rate 3 additional statements:

1. I have been made aware of our strategy through the Strategy Map
2. I understand the part I play in achieving our strategy
3. I believe in the strategy we have set out

These three statements recorded amongst the highest scoring responses, only behind ‘I support our company's mission statement' and ‘The 10 essentials are an important part of my day to day work.' In short this tells me that we have our people behind us in positioning Fitness First as the Health Club business that offers better service and better value for money than anyone else.

Never has achieving this position been more important. Across the world consumers are being more careful with their money; they have more choices as to where to go to help them achieve their health and fitness goals and the sector faces a level of commoditisation through the growth of the budget segment. The message is simple: provide great service and great value for money or under perform. This is the path we are on and we are making great progress.

Health, Fitness, Your iphone, and You

Technology has touched just about every aspect of our lives, and mobile communication is leading the forefront. The new check list before walking out the door for most of now is: coffee, keys, wallet, and mobile phone.  When our friends or co-workers are without these little devises you can see the look of bewilderment on their faces. Now that mobile phones manufactures have a death grip on our daily lives they refuse to let go, they continue to create a stronger dependence on their product.

The advancement s in technology, and especially mobile technology, is not necessarily bad. As a matter of fact, most of us rather enjoy our iPhone. The iPhone has equipped us with the ability to solve many of life's little issues without having to lug around twenty different contraptions. There are applications for our phone that allows us to take notes at the drop of a hat and share them with our colleagues. We can book all of our flights thru an iPhone application. We have even started to see advancements in education - see Learn to Speak Italian on your iPhone.

So it comes as no surprise that when we decide to get a little exercise we can now turn to our iPhone's for assistance.  When looking thru the Appstore under the Health and Fitness category there are thousands of iPhone applications to choose from. Perhaps one of the most intriguing applications is the pedometers. These applications turn your phone into an actual pedometer, and many of them even have a calories burned display.

Just like traditional pedometers, not all iPhone pedometers are created equally. When looking for a pedometer for your iPhone you want to make sure that you find one that is accurate. Pedometers that use the SmartStepTM seems to be the most accurate available, most of the iPhone pedometers using SmartStepTM actually are more accurate than traditional pedometers. Since walking or jogging is not the most social exercise, iPhone pedometers that allow you to listen to the radio while exercising are far more popular than the applications that don't have this feature.

Go Pedometer by Ilya Suzdalnitski

When it comes to finding applications for the iPhone it is recommended that you use applications from seasoned iPhone applications developers. Ilya Suzdalnitski is one such developer, he has over sixty applications available in Apples AppStore. Ilya Suzdalnitski's notoriety came from creating a series of foreign language tutors. The Foreign Language Tutor series has forever changed the way people learn to speak a foreign language.

Ilya Suzdalnitski recognized a need in the health and Fitness genre, and applied his application development skills to providing a solution for that need. Ilya Suzdalnitski in turn has created one of the more popular pedometers in use for the iPhone.

Go Pedometer, as the application is known, is packed with the features that many iPhone application users in the Health and Fitness category demand:

★ You can carry your iPhone in a pocket, on a belt or in your hand - with an advanced SmartStep™ technology Go Pedometer will work great everywhere

★ Timer automatically stops when you stop walking and resumes when you continue

★ Measures distance you passed

★ Calculates amount of calories that were burned

★ Supports English and Metric units

★ Screen automatically turns off when you put your iPhone in a pocket and Go Pedometer keeps running - this is made to save your battery life (unfortunately this feature is not available on iPod touch because of the absence of proximity sensor)

★ Ideal for walking, jogging and running

★ Embedded intelligent system will make sure that Go Pedometer will start only when you put your iPhone in a pocket

★ Simple settings - you only need to enter your weight and height - advanced calculation algorithms will do the rest for you

Technology will certainly continue to play a vital role in our daily lives, and there doesn't seem to be any arguing that Apple and the iPhone is leading the march. With a host of talented application developers, like Ilya Suzdalnitski, the iPhone/iPad will soon be as ubiquitous as the laptop.
